I-70 and Central 70
I-70 and Central 70
About this project
The I-70 and Central 70 projects in the Denver Metropolitan area represented major elements of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s efforts to bring congestion relief to primary commuter routes and economic arteries in the region. Both projects were procured via a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintain contract, and received an award from P3 Bulletin 2018 for the Best Road / Bridge / Tunnel Project and Best Financial Structure.
The Central 70 Project was to reconstruct a 10-mile stretch – removing the aging 54-year-old viaduct, lowering the interstate between Brighton and Colorado boulevards, and place a 4-acre park over a portion of the lowered interstate.
The I-70 East Project involved 11 linear miles of highway in the Denver metropolitan area from I-25 to Tower Road. A notable feature of the preferred alternative was the removal of an existing viaduct and replacing it with a below-grade highway with a tunnel cover, and a park or public space on top.
