Sunnybank Hills State School
Overview
Sunnybank Hills State School is located within a growing community in the outer southern suburbs of Brisbane. The school was first opened in 1979 and caters for students from prep to year 6. A new General Learning Centre was required due to increasing enrolments, and as the first stage of a master plan to further expand facilities.

Challenge
Removing modular buildings, shade structures and aged playgrounds, and maximising the number of new learning spaces with the smallest carbon footprint was required. The architecturally designed building heavily leans on passive design principals – evident in the classroom louvres and external shade screens, which provided design and installation challenges. Internally, the new facility’s learning spaces go beyond standard functional requirements.
Solution
Altus provided full Project and Cost Management services from planning and execution at the concept design stage through to construction and occupancy. During the design development stages, Altus worked closely with the Department of Education, the architect, interior designer, and the School’s leadership team. Altus’ Project Managers and Quantity Surveyors monitored the budget, ensuring value for money through early preliminary cost estimates, benchmarking against current market conditions and cost data from previous education projects. The classrooms responded to the multicultural/multilingual nature of the School, supporting learning outcomes and teacher requirements. Breakout rooms were treated as extensions to classrooms and outdoor courtyards link the new facility to existing buildings and learning areas.
Results
A two storey facility comprising 19 general, five outdoor and one flexible learning area with amenities and staff spaces was delivered in August 2020.
