It is with great pleasure that we welcome Joseph Gombas, Senior Director, RVA, Altus Expert Services to the Altus Vancouver office. Most recently, Joe was headquartered in the Toronto office from 2011 to 2017.
Joe is a Member in good standing of The Appraisal Institute (U.S.) (“AI”) and holds the MAI Member and AI-GRS Member designations granted by the AI. He is a Member in good standing of The Counselors of Real Estate (“CRE”) and holds the Counselor of Real Estate (“CRE”) designation granted by the CRE. Joe is a member in good standing of The Appraisal Institute of Canada (“AIC”) and holds the Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute (“AACI”) designation granted by the AIC. He is a member in good standing of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveys (“RICS”) and holds the Professional Member (“MRICS”) designation granted by RICS. Furthermore, Joe is listed on the AI’s Professional Development Program Registry for Litigation and Valuation of the Components of a Business Enterprise.
Specifically, Joe has provided expert opinion in respect to disputes between commercial landlords and tenants for various types of real property. In addition, he has provided expert testimony before the Assessment Review Board of Environment and Land Tribunals Ontario. His expertise stems from 24 years of experience in commercial real property valuation and analysis, modeling, and methodologies.
Joe worked for Integra Realty in Phoenix, Arizona from 2009 to 2011, where he gained broad exposure to a variety of property types (including office buildings, retail centers, industrial properties, undeveloped land and specialty real estate such as golf courses) challenged by adverse market conditions in Phoenix, AZ. In January 2007, Joe and his wife decided to take a pause from their careers and began extensive worldwide travel through Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, North America, Central America and Australia.
Prior to working in the United States, Joe worked at Altus Group in RVA from 1997-2007, providing consulting services to banking institutions, pension funds, insurance companies, accounting and law firms and government institutions.
In his new role in the Vancouver office, Joe will be focusing on providing valuation expertise in property disputes, and assisting staff with a broad range of appraisal and advisory assignments.
We are extremely excited to welcome Shawn Toreson, Associate Director, RVA, Altus Expert Services back to the Vancouver office. Shawn joined the Vancouver office in 2011 and was most recently headquartered in the Toronto office from 2014 to 2017.
In his new position in the Vancouver office, Shawn will be focussing on providing valuation expertise in property disputes, and assisting staff with a broad range of appraisal and advisory assignments. His services include stakeholder claims, lease disputes, such as rent determination on renewal, contamination issues, and quantification of loss and damages from expropriation.
Shawn is a MAI and AACI, and B.Comm (Hons) graduate from UBC. He brings a diverse set of skills having provided valuation services across multiple property types and geographies in Canada. He has provided advice and expert evidence to some of the industry’s leading real estate participants including publicly traded corporations, legal counsels, pension and insurance funds, and government entities. Prior to joining Altus Group, Shawn worked with the federal government’s valuation department, a property development company, and a global construction company in Hong Kong.
